Join the group to enjoy quality literature, hands-on activities, and friendship, while practicing comprehension skills!

Five weeks of 90 minute sessions: $95

Mondays from 9:30-11:00

For children aged 5-8 (limited to 8 students)

Read-alouds accompanied with a specific comprehension skill for guided practice

Hands-on activities & crafts

Practice suggestions provided for between meetings

Caregivers stay with students

Younger siblings are welcome to join!

Just $10/sibling (12mo-4yo) per five week session

Age appropriate crafts & hands-on activities will be prepared for all of the children in attendance.

Siblings can join in on the story, then enjoy activities with their caregiver.

Making Connections

Session #1: 10/5-11/2

Text to Self: Children will learn to make connections to events in the books they are reading as they notice things that have happened in their own lives. This strategy helps children understand the characters and make predictions about the story.

Text to Text: Children will explore several non-fiction texts about eggs and oviparous animals, building their schema. Then circling back to practicing text to self connections!

Weekly Challenge: Children will be provided with a notebook and challenged weekly to read a suggested book with their family and record their thinking to share at the next meeting.

Making Connections

Session #2: 11/16-12/14

Text to Text: This is a favorite skill! Children will continue their study by reading several versions of "The Gingerbread Man." Children will identify and compare story elements as we read in order to make predictions about what will happen next.

Weekly Challenge: Children will be provided with a notebook and challenged weekly to read a suggested book with their family and record their thinking to share at the next meeting.

Visualization

Session #3: 1/4-2/1

Children will listen to the descriptive text alone, without pictures. As they combine what they hear with their Schema (as discussed in previous sessions), they will draw what they see in their minds - adding pictures to text. Finally, children will explore how their schema is different from each other and the illustrator! The children will also explore (and even create) short stories, poetry, and expressive music during this session.

Weekly Challenge: Children will be provided with a notebook and challenged to put words to suggested 'wordless books' - adding words to pictures - to share at the next meeting.

Questioning & Vocabulary

Session #4: 2/15-3/15

Children will begin by exploring books with interesting vocabulary, and use clues from the text to determine what they mean. Children will then move into texts that have big questions and use the details from the text to answer them. We are creating literary super sleuths together!

Inferencing

Sessions #5: 3/29-4/26

Children will take all that they have learned throughout the year - making connections, vocabulary, questioning, visualization - and combine it with their schema to better understand some challenging stories!
